Wagh Bakri Tea Group takes legal action against ad plagiarism

A 2015 ad for Wagh Bakri Tea conceptualised by Scarecrow Communications was plagiarised by Gujarat-based tea brand Jay Jawan Tea. Wagh Bakri Tea Group will soon send a legal notice to Jay Jawan Tea for causing damage to the brand, confirmed Yogesh Shinde, GM, Marketing, Wagh Bakri Tea Group. This case of plagiarism came to light last week.
Having investigated the brand and the origin of the plagiarised ad, the Wagh Bakri Tea Group is now gearing up to take legal action against the local tea brand. “The brand that has plagiarised the ad seems to be a small outfit of three tonnes capacity,” said Shinde. The person behind the plagiarism may not have been completely aware of the consequences of his actions, added Shinde.
The original long format ad launched in 2015 ushered in a new tagline for Wagh Bakri Tea: Rishton Ki Garmahat. The plagiarised ad uses only the final portion (around 70 seconds) of the original ad where the brand is introduced.
The original ad won the ‘Best Ad Film’ at the 5th Dada Saheb Phalke Awards held in 2015. The film was directed by Aleya Sen Sharma and produced by Chrome Pictures.
