PR & Corp Comm industry will become fully digitized in coming years: Swati Nathani

Leaders define objectives and give a strategic direction to an organization, and are hence seen as catalysts of growth. Equipped with empathy and high emotional quotient along with a multitasking zest, women have always proved how good they are at leadership roles. The communications industry has been witnessing new-age women leaders with a zeal to perform, prove and prosper.
exchange4media recently honoured such women at the 'e4m PR and Corp Comm Women Achiervers Awards 2020'. Swati Nathani, Co-Founder,Team Pumpkin, was conferred the ‘CEO of the Year’ title.
Nathani has an experience of a decade in Retail Marketing, Branding, Operations, Research, Analytics and the Social Media. Leading the digital marketing agency, Nathani specializes in Digital Marketing, Social Media Management, Team Building and Culture Building.
We caught up with her for a candid conversation on her win, thoughts on women leadership, role of women in restructuring the industry, diversity at workplace, future goals and more.
How do you feel being the winner of the Women Achievers initiative?
Honestly, it feels great to be chosen among such amazing entrants by such a revered jury. I took quite some time to come to terms with the fact that it actually happened and now that this has sunk in, I feel truly blessed, full of gratitude, and much more motivated to keep evolving and becoming a better version of myself. Thanking e4m from the bottom of my heart for taking such initiative and recognizing us!
What are the attributes/ qualities required to be a leader in the communication industry?
I believe, the most important quality to be a leader in this industry is the knack of identifying and recognizing ongoing trends and behavioural patterns, and having a strong gut feel on what will work. Some of these are instinctive and some of these are acquired through experience, but a balanced combination of these two make for a good communications leader.
What role have women played in the restructuring of the industry and how has the communications industry changed over the years for the women workforce?
The communications industry is possibly one of those few industries where gender bias is not as strong. Women, their hard work, and their opinions have been respected. Obviously, there could be individuals who may have a different take, but as an industry, the communications industry has been forthcoming for women. It is even more encouraging to see a growing representation of women in the industry and I hope the trend continues.
Why do we need to have more leaders at the helm of organizations in today's scenario and what value women bring to the table?
Leadership is gender agnostic. We need leaders who are empathetic, problem solvers, and resourceful, irrespective of gender. Whether an organization is led by a woman or a man should be secondary.
What are your future goals? What initiative would you like to take as a responsible woman leader for the industry/society?
Our target is to make Team Pumpkin the best agency in India, not only from a performance perspective but also from the ease of working with an agency perspective. My initiative has been to make women in my organization to not give up early on in their career journey due to physical, societal or psychological pressures. I have always tried to make women realize their hidden talents.
How do you see the PR and the corp comm industry shaping up in the years to come and your message to the future women leaders.
I foresee the PR and Corp Comm industry to be heavily digitized in the next few years and all of us are keeping ahead of the trends in terms of imagining the usage and implementation of digital. My message for the future women leaders is just to not give up because everyone around thinks so. Hold your guns, fight for it, in most probability, you are right!
