Star India may discontinue its English Entertainment Channel Star World and Star World HD soon. A source close to the development has confirmed the news to exchange4media.

We sent an official email to Star India but didn’t receive any response at the time of filing this copy.

Last month, Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI) decided to pull the plug off its GEC channel AXN and AXN HD from July 1 while Network 18 decided to discontinue its lifestyle channel FYI TV18 and FYI TV 18 HD from 8 July.

Star World India airs popular shows from the US, UK and sometimes Australia along with some local shows to appeal to the English-speaking population of India and a few other South Asian countries.

The channel was launched 28 years ago in 1991 as Star Plus which was an English language channel with Zee TV being its Hindi counterpart. However, after Star (subsequently acquired by News Corporation) ended its partnership with Zee TV in July 2000, StarPlus was transformed into a Hindi channel, with Star World becoming the network's English channel.
