Reporter’s Diary: What we know, what have we learnt

People who have watched the recently-released movie ‘Go Goa Gone’ would surely identify with this phrase, which coincidentally also encompasses what I would want to put across today though not on the same lines. The beginning of the month is always special, owing to the fresh start that it provides to us. For me, it implies the completion of a year of my working life in exchange4media in a week’s time and also completion of a year in the media industry, to which I was completely new.

That is exactly why I would like to take the opportunity to ponder over this phrase. When I started working as a broadcast reporter, I had very little idea of what exactly I am getting into. The entire space was overwhelming with the number of channels and even larger number of activities, enough to keep a reporter on their toes for their entire life. I got a taste of the industry and loved it – everything, from show launches to serious conferences. The television medium clearly thrives on change and identifying with it was not difficult. What made it easier were my two quirky colleagues, Priyanka Nair and Saloni Surti, who are no less entertaining than television itself. They have time and again made me realise that I am not crazy as I had thought.

There is so much that I have learnt since a year – the mammoth amount of effort that it takes to make things look good on television, the ability to type an entire report on my BlackBerry, the importance of number crunching and more. The most significant lesson, however, is learning the value of time, be it the 9PM time slot or the turnover time of a report.

Though my social life has suffered, having experienced occasional bouts of outbursts from my friends, I am hoping to master the balancing act very soon. But all said and done, there is something about media which is addictive and will drive you towards it in every possible manner. As someone had rightly said, “Do something that you like and you don’t have to work a single day in life”.
