Punit Goenka, Chief Executive Officer of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL), marks his 50th birthday today, June 20. The occasion comes at a time when Zee is undergoing a significant brand evolution, with its network of channels and platforms recently adopting a refreshed ‘Z’ identity. According to Goenka, the rebranding signals Zee's move into a new phase—one that aims to deliver “purposeful entertainment” and connect more meaningfully with viewers.

Goenka, the elder son of Essel Group Chairman Subhash Chandra, has been associated with the media and entertainment business for over three decades. He started his career in 1993 within the Essel Group, selling amusement park packages for Essel World. Over the years, he took on various operational and leadership roles across group companies—working at Essel Packaging, Dish TV, and Zee Sports—before becoming the business head of Zee TV in 2005. In 2008, he was appointed CEO of ZEEL, taking over from Pradeep Guha.

Under his leadership, Zee expanded its footprint across television, digital, and music, and launched properties like ZEE5 in the OTT space. Over the years, Goenka has received several industry recognitions, including the Dun & Bradstreet Corporate Award in 2015, the IMC Fusion Award for Excellence in Media in 2013, and the Businessworld Infocom ICT Award in 2012.

On an individual level, Goenka was named the ‘IMPACT Person of the Year’ in 2014 and received the Business Today ‘Best CEO Award’ in the Media and Entertainment category in 2016. That same year, he was also honoured with MIPTV's Médaille d'Honneur. His earlier accolades include the Economic Times ‘40 Under Forty’ Award in 2014, the ‘Young CEO Award’ by CEO India magazine in 2015, the IAA Leadership Award for ‘Media Person of the Year’ in 2014, and the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ recognition at the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards.

The current phase of his leadership includes navigating corporate challenges and consolidation efforts in a changing media landscape. As Zee repositions its brand and content strategy, Goenka remains central to the group's vision and execution. Under Goenka's leadership, Zee's rebranding to 'Z' aims to signal a fresh start and showcase the company's renewed commitment to innovation and technology. This strategic pivot is designed to appeal to investors, advertisers, and talent ahead of the July 10 Extraordinary General Meeting. The Chandra family's planned capital infusion reinforces their confidence in the company's future, aligning their interests with those of the business. By rejuvenating its brand image, Zee hopes to attract better advertisers, talent, and content partners, ultimately making the business more attractive to investors. The rebranding effort, coupled with the promoters' stake hike, demonstrates a multi-pronged strategy to restore Zee's position in India's media landscape.

Outside of work, Goenka is married to Shreyasi, who is associated with the Saat Saath Arts Foundation, and the couple has three children.
