Paramount-Skydance Corporation is poised to give theatres a major boost with its proposed deal to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. According to media reports, Paramount is offering theater operators a three-year agreement under which the company will promise to release at least 30 films annually.
The proposed agreements with AMC Entertainment Holdings and Cineworld Group's Regal Cinemas, require Paramount's films to be exclusively available in theatres for at least 45 days after release, without being placed on streaming platforms. Furthermore, the films will be kept off streaming services for at least 90 days.
Paramount CEO David Ellison has already publicly pledged to continue releasing films in theatres but a formal agreement is not done yet. According to the report, the proposed agreement could also include provisions for fines or other penalties if Paramount doesn't fulfill its promises.
The agreements could provide a template for settling the antitrust lawsuit brought by 12 states to try to stop Paramount’s $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Paramount has already tried to negotiate a settlement with California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who is leading the lawsuit by the states.
