Our newsroom is the envy of the ecosystem: Kalli Purie

In a heartfelt internal note, Kalli Purie, Vice Chairperson and Executive Editor-in-Chief of the India Today Group recently announced the departure of veteran journalist and News Director Rahul Kanwal after more than two decades of service.

Kanwal, who joined the group 22 years ago, has been a towering presence across the network's flagship platforms including Aaj Tak, India Today TV, and Business Today. His journey from a passionate young journalist to becoming the News Director of TV Today Network and Executive Director of Business Today is emblematic of what Purie described as “the quintessential India Today Group narrative, an extraordinary journey of organic growth, limitless opportunities, and a meteoric rise that benefited both sides.”

Reflecting on their collaboration over the last twelve years, Purie wrote, “We have built formidable teams, created powerful editorial IPs, and traversed the length and breadth of our incredible country, collecting memories that will last a lifetime. Our newsroom is the envy of the media ecosystem.”

Her message carried both the weight of legacy and the anticipation of transformation, noting that while change is never easy, it is the very lifeblood of news. “AI is again opening a new doorway, an exciting inflection point for content creators,” she observed, signaling the network’s continued push toward innovation.

Crucially, she acknowledged Kanwal’s role in mentoring the next generation, describing them as “locked and loaded for what comes next.”

The note, equal parts send-off and rallying cry, concluded with a personal tribute: “He may go anywhere, but I know he will always carry a piece of India Today Group with him.”
