I&B Minister Prakash Javadekar says press freedom is the essence of democracy

After taking charge as Minister of Information & Broadcasting, Prakash Javadekar addressed the media and said that freedom of press is the pillar of democracy. He also mentioned that the media itself suffices for self-regulation.

Javadekar further mentioned that institutions are important for the functioning of democracy and priorities would be worked out after due consultation with the stakeholders.

He highlighted, “We believe that press freedom is the essence of democracy. And to make democracy a success, we require this press freedom because it gives people the choice in a rainbow of differing opinions.” He said it’s the responsibility of the press to uplift the people and the nation.

The Minister also touched upon the idea of “Mazboot Bharat, Viksit Bharat,” reiterating the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard. He added that we have a majority for the government but we need cooperation of the entire country to make a strong and developed nation by 2025.
