Cable and FTTH broadband operator, Hathway Cable and Datacom have launched an OTT Set Top Box (STB), based on Google’s Android TV.

Hathway has also announced the launch of a Cable Hybrid box, Hathway Ultra Smart HUB on Android. This Smart Hub combines linear TV with Play services in HDR quality.

“We have seen more and more consumers want the best of OTT services available on large screens. The idea of launching this box was to give them OTT services along with linear TV on large screens and of course to look for consumer benefits as well. Over a period of time this will segment our consumers. The top 25 per cent consumers will go for these OTT services. Any OTT service provider will be happy to do a tie up because it helps them to increase reach,” said Rajan Gupta, Managing Director, Hathway.

The box is priced at Rs 2,999 and the product will launch in 15 days through tie ups with local cable operators (LCOs). Consumers can book the boxes starting November 1 and the boxes will get installed by the end of November. Gupta said, “ Starting December 1, we should have a TVC for this product and the team is also working on a 360-degree marketing campaign. Obviously creating awareness right from metros to mini metros will be key. We will also be closing working with LCO partners to reach all homes.”

Aiming to make viewing experience on OTT TV in India easy, the Hathway Play Box, which carries a dedicated You Tube, Netflix and Google Play button on the remote control, gives the ability to consumers to access their favourite shows on the big screen with just a simple click.

Consumers can use Google Assistant through a simple voice remote for applications such as finding their favourite web series, setting timers, answering questions, weather forecast and even placing e-commerce orders. It also has an inbuilt Chromecast, which allows consumers to mirror content from phone to TV. Hathway Play Box also allows consumers to experience Android gaming on the big screen, including multiple users.
"Right now we have a capacity for 100,000 boxes per month but it can be increased based on consumer demand," added Gupta.

With easy to use smart interface, users can navigate between their linear TV channels and their play services and also customise Smart Hub with apps downloaded from the Google Play store.
"We are pleased to be working with Hathway and look forward to leveraging their extensive broadband and cable network to enable a more exciting and useful Android TV experience for consumers," said Pranab Mookken, Head Android, Chrome & Play Business Development, India.
