Mid last year, the industry was abuzz with speculation about the appointment of the new CEO of Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI). SPNI hired the best leader in the industry for the top job, someone who had a deep understanding of content, knew all formats of content, had worked on a certain scale, understood business, and was relatively younger than other top leaders and his predecessor and whose best performance/peak was in the making. Gaurav Banerjee was possibly the best hire of 2024 by this top entity in media and entertainment. Banerjee’s hiring energised SPNI.

Today the spotlight shines brightly on Gaurav Banerjee, as the Managing Director and CEO of Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) turns a year older on January 12.

Banerjee's rise in the entertainment industry is nothing short of a remarkable success story.

Banerjee is one of the few media professionals who transitioned from journalism to lead a major conglomerate in the space. The only other leader who has transitioned from being a journalist to a big leader and a very successful media CEO and entrepreneur is Uday Shankar, who is now the Vice Chairman of the Jio-Disney merged entity and amongst the tallest leaders the Indian media has seen. Uday Shankar and Gaurav Banerjee have worked together and it would be interesting to see how Gaurav Banerjee leads SPNI as Uday readies to steady and grow the behemoth that he leads as the Vice Chairman.

Banerjee’s two-decade-plus-long career encompasses his early days as a journalist, his pivotal role at Disney Star, and now his leadership at Sony. His journey serves as an inspiring example of success in the media industry.

With deep expertise in content strategy, Banerjee has a remarkable ability to turn creative visions into long-term business success. As Head of Content at Disney+ Hotstar, he curated a diverse portfolio of content that appealed to both Hindi-speaking audiences and regional markets. He successfully launched and managed regional channels such as Star Jalsha and Star Pravah, both of which quickly rose to market leadership. His keen eye for new market opportunities not only expanded the network’s footprint but also delivered substantial financial growth.

Fast forward to his time at Sony, in just four months as the Managing Director and CEO of SPNI, Banerjee has been guiding the company’s vision, optimizing operations, and strengthening its position in the market. There have been early successes and the best is yet to come. Gaurav Banerjee is making steady bets and preparing Sony India for a leap. The best of Gaurav Banerjee and SPNI is ahead of us and the network is likely to do well under his hands-on, people-centric leadership.

In fact, in this short period, he has been instrumental in driving key milestones for Sony, including a significant boost in channel viewership, securing exclusive ACC media rights (2024–2031), and bringing back iconic shows like CID to television.

Outside of work, Banerjee is a cricket fan. He enjoys following the sport closely. He is also a dedicated movie enthusiast, with a keen interest in exploring diverse genres and cinematic styles.

We are glad that January 12 is a Sunday this year—here’s hoping he gets his fill of weekend cricket and cinematic magic. Happy Birthday, Gaurav!
