Bigg Boss Halla Bol ratings increase despite Salman Khan's exit
It is too early to attribute the ratings success to Farah Khan as a host; in fact it is spicier content that is keeping viewers hooked
Bigg Boss Halla Bol is a spin-off of Bigg Boss launched by Colors post the finale of Bigg Boss season 8. The show has five contestants called the Challengers from previous seasons enter the house and compete with five remaining entrants called the Champions in the season 8 finale. The show is now hosted by Farah Khan as Salman Khan had to bid farewell to the show on January 3 due to the shooting for his next movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Despite the exit of Salman Khan, who has been associated with the show and is its face for many seasons, the show did well in its first week in terms of ratings.
According to data sourced from TAM subscribers week 2 (January 4 – 10, 2015) Bigg Boss Halla Bol saw the ratings of the show in its first week clocking in 6.4 TVTs. This was up from 6.1 TVTs in week 1 (December 28, 2014 – January 3, 2015). Its initial start on January 3 saw the shows weekend viewership jump to 6.5 million viewers from 5.3 million viewers. The weekday average ratings have also increased to 6.4 million viewers from 4.7 million viewers. Apart from this time spent on Bigg Boss Halla Bol on weekdays has increased to 23 minutes from 19 minutes.
The concept of the spin-off show also seems to work which is an adaptation from the Ultimate Big Brother.
However, according to media planners the concept and content of the show has got audiences hooked onto it and that it is too early to attribute the show’s success to Farah Khan. Though Salman Khan has managed to bring people onto the show it is the content that has kept them hooked onto the show and that goes for any host.
Speaking on this Ashish Bhasin, Chairman & CEO – South Asia, Dentsu Aegis Network says, “Bigg Boss has built itself as a good property and therefore has its own following and own people who look out for it. The presenter matters less and less over a period of time because the show builds its own property and that is the phenomenon that we are seeing. The presenter does make a difference but what it shows is this whole format of the show has clicked with the consumer and therefore an individual matters less.”
On a similar note, Tarun Nigam, Director, PM Media Solutions feels that it is too early to tell if Farah Khan has had an influence on the show as it has been only a week and that the content is what has increased the eyeballs. “The reason for the show’s good performance is that the content is more interesting and that it has become spicier for the audience, which has kept them hooked on,” he said. He added that no doubt Salman Khan is a good presenter and has done well for the show but it would be too early to connect the show’s performance to Farah Khan coming in.
This can be seen in Bigg Boss 8’s performance which has been consistently increasing in the four weeks prior to the first week of Bigg Boss Halla Bol. In week 50, 2014 its ratings stood at 5.2 TVTs and increased 5.4 TVTs in week 51, 2014. Week 52, 2014 saw the show’s ratings further grow to 5.7 TVTs and then consequently to 6.1 TVTs during the finale of Bigg Boss 8 in week 1, which was the last week of Salman Khan on the show. The spin-off show has just continued to maintain the consistency in the ratings growth as it has managed to capture the audience interest during the final stages of Bigg Boss 8 and extend that interest by bringing in contestants from the previous seasons. We can definitely assume the audience to grow even further during the final stages of this spin-off.
