Kungumam, owned by South Indian media conglomerate Kalanithi Maran’s Sun Network, has launched a health magazine, ‘Kungumam Doctor’. The magazine hit the newsstands on August 29, 2014.

The magazine has been launched with 64 pages, later the group plans to increase the number of pages after looking at the response from the readers. The magazine has a cover price of Rs 15 and an initial print run of 60,000 copies. The group expects to take it to 1 lakh copies within a span of six months after the launch. The magazine has been launched as a fortnightly on a pan-India basis. There are plans to go digital after the launch.

Commenting on the launch of ‘Kungumam Doctor;, M Natesan, General Manager, Marketing, Magazine Division, Kal Publication said, “We are already present in different sections in the Tamil magazine space, we wanted to cater to the health sector also. Though this section has been already catered, we found that this niche section has not been covered with the right perspective, so we initiated this genre to be well addressed to the readers.”

The magazine’s content spans health tips for healthy living, prevention and remedy for all kinds of health issues with inputs from specialists and so on. The idea behind the magazine launch is to help readers lead a happy, healthy and wealthy life.

On the national front, some of the biggest competitors to ‘Kungumam Doctor’ include ‘Women’s Heath’, ‘Men’s Health’, ‘Prevention’, ‘Health Care’ and ‘Health & Fitness’ magazines. While on the regional front, the competitors include ‘Doctor Vikatan’ from the Vikatan Group’s stable and ‘Kumudum Health’ from Kumudum Group in Chennai.

In order to promote the magazine, the group has adopted a 360-degree approach. Promotions are currently underway only on the group’s Tamil channels and on their Tamil print publications such as Dinakaran, Tamil Murasu, and radio station Suryan FM.
