Addressing the audience at TechManch 2019, Atul Jalan, Founder and Managing Director, Manthan, began by saying, “Can you imagine life without inventions.” He was speaking at the ‘The Transformation of Media in the Digital Era’ session, where he explained how the media industry has changed over time and how it has impacted traditional media around the world.

“The change is unfolding at a relentless speed, it is, in fact, hurtling forward rather than just accelerating. We don’t feel the change because we are part of it,” Jalan said.

He added disruption is progress, disruption is chaotic and disruption is destruction. “Mankind is at a stage where they are going through a revolution wrought by new emerging tech,” Jalan said.

He also spoke about path-breaking transformations that technology is ushering into mankind as a society and as a species.

Speaking about the traditional media industry, Jalan said that all traditional media companies are struggling in an era where content is the king. “It’s an irony of our times that traditional media now has to depend on Pay Pal to sustain because 70-80 per cent of the ad revenue is being generated by the likes of Facebook and Google and that’s why these media houses are opting for providing content with a premium attached to it.”

According to him, the idea of paid content will not work because the internet has spoiled humans. Jalan told the audience that the whole model of traditional media is modelled on truth, whereas when it comes to social media, it is pure engagement.

In the past few years, science and technology have opened up a plethora of opportunities for humans, he said, adding that the fusion of technology and biology will amplify the pace of human lives in the coming years.
