The market in India is extremely dynamic and is a leading growth engine for the region, said BP Biddappa, executive director and chief people, transformation and sustainability officer at Hindustan Unilever, in an interview with Economic Times’ Brand Equity.
According to the exec, the FMCG giant is aligning its operations with Unilever’s global strategy, emphasising on India as a key growth market. So HUL has reportedly rolled out an organisation-wide productivity programme to make it more optimised and streamlined in response to Unilever global CEO Fernando Fernandez's vision for India.
Bidappa highlighted that the conglomerate’s performance is linked to how fast it can respond to consumer needs and how well connected it is with consumers. “So while performance as an overall theme remains the same, the focus on understanding consumers and building speed and agility increases even more,” he told the publication.
Fernandez in an interview with Barclays had pointed out the growing influence of India, China and Indonesia. “In India, we’re shaping our portfolio in line with shifts in consumer preference and channels. In China, our strategy is now more selective, and we’re adopting a more direct route to market. And in Indonesia, we’re seeing green shoots and have been beating our forecasts in recent months,” he said.
