Thiagarajan, Managing Director of Blue Star Limited, celebrates his birthday today. With a career spanning more than four decades, Thiagarajan has been at the forefront of India’s cooling, refrigeration, and air-conditioning sector, playing a key role in shaping one of the country’s most respected engineering and consumer durable companies.
Thiagarajan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Madurai University. He began his career with leading organizations such as Larsen & Toubro, BPL Systems, and Voltas, gaining early exposure to engineering, product management, and operations. In 1998, he joined Blue Star Limited, the company that would define the larger part of his professional journey.
At Blue Star, Thiagarajan rose steadily through leadership roles. He managed diverse portfolios including service businesses, corporate communications, planning, and marketing. In 2009, he was promoted to President of the Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Products Group, responsible for expanding the company’s presence in a rapidly growing market. In 2016, he became Joint Managing Director, and in April 2019, he was appointed Managing Director.
In his current role, Thiagarajan oversees critical business divisions. His responsibilities cover sales, marketing, supply chain, service operations, manufacturing, and research and development. He is also responsible for the Projects and Products segments, which include Electro-Mechanical Projects, Air-Conditioning Solutions, Cooling and Purification Appliances, and a wide array of commercial and residential products. Alongside his executive role, he serves on Blue Star’s board and chairs its Corporate Social Responsibility Committee. He is also a member of the Audit and Risk Management Committees.
Thiagarajan’s remit extends to Blue Star’s international operations. He sits on the boards of group companies such as Blue Star Engineering & Electronics Limited in India, Blue Star International FZCO in Dubai, Blue Star Systems & Solutions LLC in the UAE, and BSL AC&R (Singapore) Pte. Limited. These roles reflect the company’s expansion into overseas markets and its continued effort to build a global footprint.
His professional interests include diversification into adjacencies, Industry 4.0 practices, marketing innovations, environmental sustainability, and total cost management. He has been directly involved in ensuring Blue Star adapts to regulatory frameworks on disclosure, governance, and sustainability. His approach has balanced growth with compliance and responsibility, ensuring that the company maintains a strong reputation in public markets.
Beyond corporate responsibilities, Thiagarajan has been active in industry associations and policy forums. He is a past president of the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Manufacturers Association (RAMA) and has chaired and co-chaired several committees within the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). These include the CII National Cold Chain Taskforce, the CII Agriculture Council, and the Western Regional Council of CII. He has also been a nominated member of the CII National Council. Through these positions, he has contributed to discussions on industrial growth, sustainability, cold chain infrastructure, and rural development.
Thiagarajan has also engaged in wider social and development conversations. He has been associated with the Ideal Village Conference, a platform that explores sustainable rural transformation. As Chairman of the CII National Task Force on Rural Development and Migrant Workforce, he has advocated for aligning industrial capabilities with broader social needs, especially in agriculture, cold storage, and supply chain infrastructure.
His leadership at Blue Star has coincided with significant shifts in the industry. Energy efficiency, green technologies, and environmental standards have become central to product development and project execution. Under Thiagarajan, Blue Star has continued to invest in R&D and manufacturing upgrades to meet these challenges while retaining competitiveness in both domestic and overseas markets.
Marking his birthday today, B. Thiagarajan’s career underscores the trajectory of a professional who has combined technical expertise, operational leadership, and governance.
