American Express has officially entered the digital advertising space with the launch of Amex Ads, a new media network powered by the company’s robust first-party data from 34 million U.S. cardholders. Announced during Advertising Week New York, this move signals American Express' deeper investment in commerce media, a rapidly growing sector where companies monetize customer data through precise digital advertising.

Amex Ads builds on over a decade of success from the company’s offers business, which generated $15 billion in cardmember spending last year, mostly in the U.S. The new network promises advanced contextual targeting, end-to-end measurement, and brand-safe environments, all within the “four walls” of the Amex ecosystem.

Early pilot campaigns with luxury luggage brand Tumi and hotel chain Marriott demonstrate the network’s effectiveness. Marriott used Amex’s travel booking data to target users who had booked flights but not hotels, leading to a 300% ROI above expectations. Meanwhile, Tumi’s campaign reached new millennial and Gen Z customers through tailored travel-related placements, achieving a 30% higher return on ad spend than benchmarks.

Amex Ads isn’t limited to travel-centric brands. The platform is designed to help both endemic and non-endemic advertisers track online and offline conversions with a holistic view of the customer journey.

Following Mastercard’s recent entry into the space, American Express becomes the second major payments company in a week to launch an ad network. With U.S. retail media spending expected to approach $100 billion by 2028, the race to turn first-party data into ad dollars is intensifying and financial firms like Amex are now staking their claim.
