Cricket’s next phase of evolution is being shaped not only by performances on the field, but also by the thinking that happens behind the scenes. As data, technology and collaboration become central to modern sport, Rajasthan Royals is exploring new ways to engage off field talent and collective intelligence in shaping the future of cricket strategy.
Modern cricket strategy is built through preparation, analysis and informed decision making that begins long before players step onto the field. From understanding matchups to anticipating conditions and planning squads, these processes increasingly depend on diverse perspectives and structured thinking.

To facilitate this, Rajasthan Royals recently concluded the SupeRR Selector Hackathon—a pioneering initiative in "open sourcing" sports strategy. This first-of-its-kind program within India’s biggest T20 league ecosystem was designed to bring young analytical minds into the heart of the team's decision-making process. More than 7,500 participants from 39 nationalities registered for the challenge, with over 1,500 submitting complete analytical models. Sixteen finalists were invited to the franchise’s Mumbai office for a full-day immersive challenge that replicated real-world strategic decision-making.
Rather than positioning the initiative as a conventional competition, the franchise framed it as a collaborative exercise where learning flowed both ways.
"At Rajasthan Royals, we’ve always believed that great outcomes are achieved when you move beyond closed-door thinking and tap into the wider ecosystem. The SupeRR Selector Hackathon was born from the idea that intelligence isn't limited to a small group of specialists, but exists in the collective brilliance of young minds across the globe. By open-sourcing our challenges and inviting these bright individuals to become part of our strategic journey, we aren't just looking for better data—we are building a more inclusive, and transparent future for the sport.", said Alok Chitre, Chief Operating Officer, Rajasthan Royals
The accompanying video, released alongside the initiative, captures this philosophy in action. From intense discussions around data models to candid moments of problem solving between the Rajasthan Royals leadership team and the finalists, the film highlights how shared intelligence can elevate strategic outcomes.
The franchise’s approach is rooted in a long standing belief that talent is not limited to the field. Over the years, Rajasthan Royals has built teams, both playing and non playing, by backing individuals early in their careers and allowing them to grow through experimentation and responsibility.
The SupeRR Selector Hackathon extends that belief to the wider cricket ecosystem. Participants, most of whom are students and early career professionals, were exposed to the same constraints, trade offs and complexities that teams face during auctions and squad building.
One of the strongest takeaways from the initiative was the depth of insight that exists within the fan and youth community when given the right framework. Participants brought fresh perspectives shaped by diverse academic backgrounds, global exposure and a deep passion for the game.
This is where open sourcing and collaborative thinking becomes an ecosystem building tool. By creating structured pathways for participation, franchises can unlock new ideas while simultaneously nurturing the next generation of strategists, technologists and creators.
The video reinforces this sentiment, featuring participants reflecting on the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a professional sports organisation, not as spectators but as collaborators.
For Rajasthan Royals, the SupeRR Selector is only the beginning. The franchise has indicated its intent to explore similar collaborative models across analytics, technology, creative design and fan engagement in the future.
The larger vision is clear. Cricket’s evolution will be driven not just by what happens on the pitch, but by how inclusive, curious and participative its ecosystem becomes beyond it.
As sport continues to intersect with data, creativity and community, Rajasthan Royals’ experiment offers a glimpse into a future where strategy is shaped through collaboration, trust and collective intelligence.
