DW’s weekly flagship programme for India - Eco India - completed one year of success this week. It is a show catering to sustainability and environmental issues from Europe and India.

Eco India was started with the aim to bring sustained, constructive journalism on the environment to the mainstream. The show focusses on changemakers and how they have gone against the tide to solve problems that effect day to day lives of people living across continents.

For DW, co-productions have become one major success factor. Commenting on the importance of this approach, DW’s Director General Peter Limbourg said, "People want news but also motivating stories and educational programs that touch peoples’ lives directly, and sustainability and climate change topics remain on top. Through our co-production with, we are able to highlight stories of 'heroes' on the ground who are working tirelessly for the cause of saving the planet. As Germany’s public international broadcaster, it is our objective to provide independent, impartial and comprehensive information which will help people form their own opinions about the world."

This unique coproduction is also part of DW’s strategic expansion plan in South Asia which includes plans to open a new bureau in New Delhi, in the first quarter of 2020. This will allow DW to also generate more regional content. DW offers content in eight Asian languages including Hindi, Urdu and Bengali catering to the South Asian audience. The successful running of Eco India in English language has also led to it being now offered in Hindi since September this year. lays special emphasis on reporting environment issues and commenting on this collaboration. Samir Patil, CEO & Founder of said, “In India, we need more such collaborations to bring light on ground innovations. We observe that there is huge public interest in such stories, yet few get told. For us, the coproduction also gives a chance for such success stories in India to be showcased to an international audience, through DW’s vast global outreach.”

Commenting on the experience of hosting Eco India. Sannuta Raghu, Executive Producer at, says, “Eco India has brought me closer to the people who are solving some of the biggest problems concerning the environment. The show zooms in on solutions instead of problems- that’s our USP and that’s what our viewers connect with, the most. India has such rich diversity of cultures and languages but the problems relating to the environment are universal. The next step for Eco India, will be to reach this diversity in the language of their choice.”
