Google trends highlight dip in IPL's popularity in week 1

It has been only two weeks since the seventh season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) commenced amid the frenzy over the Lok Sabha elections, and already comparisons over trends, buzz and team mentions have begun within the industry.

Google search trends analysis related to IPL 7 during the initial launch week of the cricketing extravaganza has come up with some highlights which suggest that the popularity of IPL in week 1 this year has declined, as compared to last year in the same period. However, Google could not ascertain the cause for this decline.

As per a release issued, “Comparing the search interest for IPL 6 with the latest edition of Indian Premier League, Google search trends reflect the loss of interest among the digital audience. Going by the search patterns, IPL 7 doesn’t seem to have taken off well compared to IPL 6, which saw search graphs ticking the peak in initial days of the start of the event. Did elections impact the interest or rising controversies bolted the loss, this still needs to be ascertained?”

The release further stated, “Regional interest for IPL witnessed significant movement with West Bengal, taking the top spot as the state searched the most for Indian Premier League. Karnataka, from where the most number of searches emerged during the last season, was found trailing on the fifth spot.

As far as the popularity of the teams is concerned, the trends highlighted that Chennai Super Kings occupied the top spot with fans, with enthusiasts following the team religiously. The second spot was occupied by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) took the third and fourth spots, followed by Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (HSR) and Delhi Daredevils (DD) at the bottom.
