FIFA World Cup 2014 final breaks social media records
The Germany-Argentina clash generated frenetic activity on social media as well with 88 million people on Facebook engaged in interactions. The final also saw 32.1 million tweets
Even as Germany became the first European nation to win a FIFA World Cup in South American soil, the clash between Germany and Argentina in the World Cup 2014 finals has broken social media records for a sporting event.
On Facebook, 88 million people had more than 280 million interactions (posts, comments, and likes) related to the World Cup final with the most interactions coming from the US (10.5 million). The match broke the record for the highest level of Facebook conversations for any single sporting event in history, with the previous record holder being the Super Bowl XLVII on February 3, 2013 with 245 million interactions.
Twitter frenzy around the World Cup Final was even more acute with 618,725 tweets recorded per minute (TPM) at the moment Germany lifted the World Cup. This set a new record for TPM, breaking the earlier record set by Sami Khedira’s 29th minute strike during Germany’s 7-1 trouncing of Brazil during the semi-finals, which had seen 580,166 TPM. However, that match still maintains the record of being the most discussed sporting event in Twitter history with 35.6 million tweets. In comparison, the final saw 32.1 million tweets.
According to numbers released by both Facebook and Twitter, goal scorer for Germany, Mario Gotze, and Argentinean superstar and Golden Ball winner Lionel Messi were the most discussed players for their respective teams.
