Modi government spent over Rs 3800 crore on ads in three years

MIB has informed Rajya Sabha that of the total amount spent, over 42% was on ads in English and regional language newspapers

The government has spent a whooping Rs 3,807.62 crore on advertising in the past three years. The information has been provided by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) to the Rajya Sabha in response to a question.

The ministry said that the amount was spent by the Bureau of Outreach and Communication, a media unit under the ministry, since 2015.

The government spent Rs 1190.53 crore, Rs 1279.83 cr and 1337.26 cr during the years 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18, respectively.

The government spends on advertisements in two ways—first through the MIB and second through other client ministries/govt departments.  While I&B ministry spent over 61.14 crore in 2017-18, the expenditure during the same period by other client ministries/departments was a whooping over Rs 570.69 crore. 

The total expenditure by the government on advertisements in newspapers was Rs 510.68 cr, RS 463.37 cr and Rs 631.83 cr in the years 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18, respectively.
The MIB shared the details of amount spent on advertisements in newspapers of English language and regional languages.

According to the data, of the total amount spent by the government on advertisements in the last three years, over 42% was spent on English and regional language newspapers.

Also, in the last three years, the total amount that the government spent on advertising in newspapers, i.e. Rs 1605.88 crore, Rs 639.86 crore was spent on Hindi language newspapers, making it around 40% (39.84%) of the total amount spent on newspaper advertisements. 
English language newspapers were also not much behind. Around Rs 498.14 crore was spent for advertising in 
English language newspapers, which comes out to be 31.01% of the total amount spent on newspaper advertisements.

The other language newspapers on which the government spends significant amount of money for advertisements are Urdu, Marathi, Odia, Gujarati and Bengali.
