Ex-RBI deputy governor BP Kanungo joins IIFL Finance Board

Kanungo’s regulatory depth and RBI experience aim to bolster IIFL Finance’s governance, compliance and financial inclusion goals

IIFL Finance has onboarded B.P. Kanungo, former Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as an Independent Director. With nearly 40 years at the RBI, Kanungo is known for his expertise in currency management, digital payments, forex regulation, consumer protection and IT governance.

He served as RBI Deputy Governor between 2017 and 2021, shaping India’s monetary policy as part of the Monetary Policy Committee. He also held board positions at NABARD, NHB, Punjab National Bank, and was a member of global forums under the Bank for International Settlements.

Post-RBI, he contributed to the Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning (CAFRAL), mentoring financial sector leaders.

Welcoming the appointment, IIFL founder Nirmal Jain said Kanungo’s vast regulatory experience will reinforce IIFL’s governance and support its mission of tech-enabled financial inclusion. Kanungo expressed commitment to strengthening compliance and risk frameworks while reaching underserved segments through IIFL’s wide network.
