D&AD has appointed David Patton as its new Chief Executive Officer, with his role beginning later this month. Patton brings many years of leadership experience across marketing, advertising and production. His background closely matches D&AD’s goal of promoting and supporting creative excellence across design, advertising and commercial creativity. He joins the organisation at a time when the industry is changing rapidly and D&AD is continuing to expand its influence.

During his career, Patton has held several senior positions. He served as European Vice President of Marketing at Sony PlayStation and later as Senior Vice President of Marketing for Sony Europe (Sony Electronics). In these roles, he became known for encouraging high standards of creativity.

He supported some of the most recognised commercial campaigns in recent years, including PlayStation’s Double Life and Sony Bravia’s award-winning Balls campaign, which received multiple D&AD Pencils. Patton also led major creative agencies, working as CEO of Grey London, EMEA President at Grey, and later Global President of Young & Rubicam. He went on to become Global President of The Mill and MPC Advertising, and most recently served as CEO of animation and visual effects studio Jellyfish Pictures.

Tim Lindsay, Chairman of D&AD, said Patton’s career has prepared him well to lead the organisation. He highlighted Patton’s consistent focus on creative quality, talent development and adapting to industry changes.

Lisa Smith, President of D&AD and Global Chief Design Officer at Uncommon, added that D&AD’s priority is always the quality of work it supports. She said Patton has the vision and leadership needed to maintain those standards, while also supporting emerging creatives and helping people at all stages of their careers grow and succeed.

Speaking about his appointment, David Patton said that creative excellence is shaped by everyone in the industry — from young talent to global organisations. He noted that as the industry continues to evolve, D&AD plays an important role in guiding standards and nurturing future talent. He also mentioned initiatives such as Shift, New Blood and D&AD’s learning programmes, which help open doors for the next generation of creatives. Patton said he is excited to build on D&AD’s strong legacy and continue pushing the creative industry forward.
