Chanchal Kumar has been appointed as the Secretary of as Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB).

Kumar will replace Sanjay Jaju, who has now been appointed Secretary, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.

Chanchal Kumar, a 1992-batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre, currently serves as Secretary in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).

The appointment comes at a critical juncture for the I&B Ministry, which is navigating a rapidly evolving media ecosystem marked by regulatory changes, the growth of digital platforms, and increased oversight of online content. Kumar’s administrative experience, particularly in handling complex inter-ministerial portfolios, is expected to play a key role in shaping policy direction in the sector.

Kumar has held several key positions across the government during his career, gaining experience in governance, infrastructure, and regional development. His tenure at DoNER involved overseeing development initiatives in the North Eastern states, a region that requires close coordination between central and state governments. His exposure to such multi-stakeholder governance frameworks is likely to be relevant as the I&B Ministry continues to engage with broadcasters, digital platforms, and regulatory bodies.

The reshuffle also reflects a broader realignment at the secretary-level across ministries. Sanjay Jaju, also a 1992-batch IAS officer, will move from the I&B Ministry to head DoNER, effectively swapping roles with Kumar.
