Shamsher Singh to head Republic TV’s soon-to-be-launched Hindi channel
Flashed on Friday: Singh was last associated with India News as Editor (National Affairs).
Putting to rest all speculations, it has been announced that senior journalist Shamsher Singh of India News will be the Editor of Republic TV’s soon-to-be-launched Hindi channel. Highly placed sources in the industry said Singh will take complete charge of the channel soon. With over 20 years of experience, Singh has worked with leading television channels, including India News, Zee Hindustan and Aaj Tak.
Speculations around the launch of Republic TV’s Hindi channel have been rife for the last few months. In June this year, a fundraising note for the Hindi channel was circulated by the Gurugram office of Client Associates, a financial consultancy firm that stated that it has received the mandate to do so from the channel. The note further stated that “with the Hindi news channel scaling up in the next few years, Republic plans to either go IPO or get a large strategic investor by 2020-21.”
Describing Arnab Goswami as a “celebrity anchor” and Republic TV as “the first English news channel in the history to turn profitable within such a short span of time,” the note stated that “the company now plans to enter the Hindi news genre ahead of the 2019 elections and is planning to raise INR 120 Cr, to set up a Hindi news channel under the ‘Republic’ brand.”
Singh was last associated with India News as Editor (National Affairs). He joined India News in March 2018. Before India News, Singh had been working with Zee Hindustan as Political Editor. He was with Zee from April 2017 to October 2017.
Singh started his career with Aaj Tak, where he worked for 16 long years. When he quit Aaj Tak, he was a Deputy Editor. After Aaj Tak, he had joined Zee.
Singh has been awarded the prestigious Ramnath Goenka Award for ‘on-the-spot reporting’. He has a reputation of doing exclusive stories and special shows. Apart from politics, he is said to have a good hold on topics such as internal security and foreign policy.
