Dr Uday Nirgudkar, editor in chief of popular Marathi news channel Zee 24 Taas resigned unexpectedly on October 31 evening. Senior journalist Vijay Kuvlekar took over as the editor of the news channel. After interviewing minister Chandrakantdada Patil, he returned to his office and addressed all the employees, stating that it was his last day at work.

According to media reports, this abrupt resignation came as a shock to the employees of the organisation. For the uninitiated, this was Nirgudkar’s first stint as an editor on television. During the five years we he worked with the brand, he became hugely popular for making Zee 24 Taas number one news channel. He was also known for his aggressive marketing and advertising techniques and was a toast of the corporate world because of the same. His policies strengthened the brand furthermore.

Kuvlekar, who has now taken over the reins of the channel, has been associated with brands like Sakal and Lokmat in the past. He was initially roped about two months in at Zee for a new Marathi weekly the organisation is planning to launch. But now the general contention in the industry is that Kuvlekar might permanently hold the post of editor in chief if the company fails to get a new editor soon.
