CBI raid on NDTV sets social media abuzz
With Twitter bursting into a virtual fistfight, #NDTV and #PrannoyRoy figured among top trends
After the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided the offices and homes of NDTV founder Prannoy Roy over allegations of defrauding a bank of Rs 48 crore on Monday, popular social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook witnessed a frenzied flow of reactions and counter reactions.
As soon as the news about the raids was out, Twitter burst into a virtual fistfight. Reactions of all kinds flooded the timeline with #NDTV and #PrannoyRoy figuring among top trends.
Here are some of the Twitter reactions and counter reactions:
The government’s claim that the raids did not stem from any political interference did not convince the opposition, which termed the search operations as an infringement on the freedom of press.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu tried to defend the action by pointing out that the law was taking its course. “If somebody does something wrong, then you cannot expect the government to keep quiet simply because they belong to media,” Naidu said.
Terming the raids as “blatant political attack on the freedom of the press”, NDTV in a statement said, “NDTV and its promoters have never defaulted on any loan to ICICI or any other bank. We adhere to the highest levels of integrity and independence. It is clearly the independence and fearlessness of NDTV's team that the ruling party's politicians cannot stomach and the CBI raid is merely another attempt at silencing the media.”
On the other hand, the Editors Guild of India, in a statement to the press, expressed its deep concern over the raids conducted by CBI. The entry of police and other agencies into the media offices is a serious matter, the statement said. While the Editors Guild of India maintains that no individual or institution is above the law, it condemns any attempt to muzzle the media and calls upon the CBI to follow the due process of law and ensure there is no interference in the free functioning of news operations. For more updates, be socially connected with us on
