After years of speculation, negotiations and diplomatic dance-offs, Tesla has officially announced its entry into the Indian market. The company will open its first showroom at Mumbai’s Jio World Drive in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai, on July 15.

But this isn’t just another car dealership. Tesla’s Mumbai showroom will be an ‘experience center’ showcasing the Model Y and Model 3. After a long delay and the highly anticipated entry of Tesla in India, the launch is expected to stir up major excitement among car enthusiasts. While the first few days will cater only to VIPs and business partners, regular customers will gain access shortly after. The showroom will also function as a full 3S outlet—sales, service, spares—directly operated by Tesla.

This announcement marks a major milestone for both Tesla fans and India’s EV landscape. One user on X shared, “The future always arrives slower than you want and faster than you expect. Big milestone for Tesla and India.” The excitement reflects the kind of brand power Tesla holds. Another post read, “This is the Super Bowl of EVs for India. Don’t talk to me unless you’re at BKC on July 15.”

But here’s a twist - the company isn’t manufacturing in India, at least not yet. Cars and merchandise will be imported from the US and China under a temporary window of tax concessions. Deliveries won’t start until late August for Model Y.

India’s EV market is largely price-sensitive, but Tesla is entering with a bold premium positioning. While the company has yet to announce a country head or local manufacturing plans, its upcoming Mumbai showroom marks a confident first step. The real question now is whether Indians are ready not just to admire Tesla, but to actually buy it.
