In an extraordinary auction moment, the original Hermès Birkin bag crafted especially for actress Jane Birkin has sold for an astonishing €8.58 million ($10.04 million). The auction, which took place at Sotheby’s auction in Paris, set a new benchmark in fashion history by being the most expensive handbag ever sold.
Jean-Louis Dumas, the CEO of Hermès at the time, created this black leather bag, which led to a heated 10-minute bidding battle during which offers came in from all over the world over the phone, online, and in person. The audience gasped when the bidding began at €1 million, and it swiftly increased in value before a Japanese collector won €7 million, or €8.58 million with fees.
The history of the bag dates back to 1984, when Dumas on a flight heard the frustration of the actress of not being able to find a stylish yet functional bag. He sketched the prototype of the bag right there in the flight with “J.B.” initials and a fixed strap unlike later versions, redefining luxury for decades.
Aurélie Vassy, Head of Sotheby’s Handbags and Fashion Department for Europe and the Middle East said to the media, “It was a travel bag. Clearly, it was worn for nine years by Jane Birkin on a daily basis and the form is still very beautiful.”
In 1994, Birkin first put the item up for auction to raise money for the HIV/AIDS charity Sidaction. It reappeared in 2000 in the possession of a private French collector, and since Birkin's death in 2023, it has grown into a potent homage to her memory.
The sale also marks a broader shift in fashion, reflecting on how maximalism and statement pieces are back in vogue. As fashion embraces bolder, moving beyond minimalism, collectors in recent times are chasing bold iconic pieces of design history. After all, “It’s not just a bag, it’s a Birkin.”
