Indian Cellular Association raises concerns about Freedom 251 smartphone
The phone- Freedom 251 is touted as the result of the Make in India initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but the Indian Cellular Association has written to the telecom minister about the pricing of the new phone, arguing that it could not be below Rs 3,500 ($51) even after subsidies.
Noida based start-up Ringing Bells recently announced the launch of the world’s cheapest smartphone, priced at Rs 251. The phone- Freedom 251 is touted as the result of the Make in India initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The online sale started on Thursday (February 18) through the company’s website from 6am and will end on February 21 at 8pm, with delivery within four months. However, soon after the sale started, the firm had to suspend taking orders for the next 24 hours due to overload. It was even trending on Twitter, where people expressed their disappointment about the situation.
Since the launch of this phone, it has generated enough curiosity and excitement. On one hand, when Freedom 251 is being placed as a game changer in the smartphone market, there are experts who are even raising concerns about it being a massive scam.
According to reports, India’s mobile industry body Indian Cellular Association has written to the telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad about the pricing of the new phone, arguing that it could not be below Rs 3,500 ($51) even after subsidies.
The Freedom 251 runs on Android 5.1, with a 4-inch display, a quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage (expandable to 32GB). It also has a 3.2 megapixel front camera and a 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera and comes with preloaded apps on women safety, Swachh Bharat, to help farmers gain information on scientific methods and fishermen getting safety and weather updates.
