IPL 9: Bangalore Vs Hyderabad attracts maximum viewership in first week

The BARC ratings of the first week of Vivo IPL (Indian Premiere League) 9 have come out.  The opening match between Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiants on April 9 and the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 12 has recorded maximum ratings of 24,118 and 24,137 respectively.

Out of the three official broadcasters, Sony Six and Sony ESPN saw these matches recording the highest ratings.

However, it was a different story on Sony Max, where the fifth match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians caught viewers’ interest and recorded the highest ratings of 18,169. It’s to be noted that both have been crowned IPL champions in the past –the former won in 2014 while the latter in 2015.

The matches involving IPL’s new entrants, Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiants witnessed average ratings, except for the opening match. The match between the two on April 14 garnered 20,333 ratings.

The first seven IPL matches managed an average of 20,821 ratings. The movie channel Sony Max witnessed the highest average ratings of 15,269 followed by sports channels Sony Six (3,794) and Sony ESPN (1,756), which is surprising for the latter. For week 15 (9-15 April, 2016) of the BARC Ratings Sony Max topped the charts in the Hindi movie category with 85,0223 ratings.

The ratings have been inconsistent with the second match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils and the last match (for the week) between Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab recording the lowest ratings of 17,709 and 14,912 respectively.

According to media reports, the broadcasters aren’t happy with the first week’s fading TV ratings which can be attributed to the overdose of T20 cricket.
