Five things that Cyrus Oshidar looks forward to as a Cannes Juror
This is my first time at Cannes Lions and when they first contacted me, I thought I was being asked to judge a porn festival...I must have read Loins where it said Lions! Now they tell me it’s an advertising awards ceremony and I have to judge branded content.
Sounds exciting...but my airline won't give me a refund or an airhostess that smiles – except when I leave the plane. Worst of all, I have to pay for the airfare...must be the Eurozone recession thing I guess!
I have been away from the motherland for much of the last three years. So, I have spoken to few people from our profession – even less than the few who once spoke to me. Hence, I am afraid I have heard very little from past jurors. But none the less, here is what I am looking forward to from the festival...
1) Seeing the best of branded content from across the world.
2) Meeting the best minds in the field.
3) Seeing branded content finally get the platform it deserves so that people like me can make some money.
4) Wearing a suit after twelve years.
5) Coming back and instantly becoming ‘The’ proven expert in this field. This part of it is the most appealing. Jai Hind.

Voted by his peers as one of the ten most influential people in Indian advertising and among its top five creative directors, Cyrus Oshidar is best known for his work at MTV Networks, India, where he headed the creative departments of MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon. Under Oshidar’s stewardship MTV became one of India’s most powerful and iconic youth brands. His work here has been credited with changing the tone and manner in which young people were communicated to in India. He was personally responsible for creating all of MTV India’s most successful image campaigns for over a decade – most of which became household names.
Oshidar has won numerous accolades and awards locally and internationally; over 50 Promax awards, various Asian Media Awards, the Advertising & Marketing Youth Marketer of the Year, Advertiser of the Year, Music Channel Of The Year, TV campaign Of The Year, Outstanding Brand Of the Year (MTV), two New York Festivals Awards and many Abby Awards.
He has also been a consultant to the BBC World Service Trust, the Government of India’s National Aids Control Organisation, Procter & Gamble, a judge at the Emmy Awards (India), guest speaker at Promax. He also participated in Lille 2006, as well as The Edge of Desire – a global retrospective of Indian art – and had his work featured at the Hanover Film and Video Festival.
Oshidar is a founder-member of Games2win, a top 20 online games company. He has just spent two years in Dubai and Kabul where he worked on campaigns for governance, development, accountability for the Moby Group in Afghanistan. Oshidar now lives and works in Mumbai from where he runs his own consultancy.
The Branded Content and Entertainment Lions category has 15 jury members apart from the Jury President, Avi Savar, Founder of Big Fuel.
