Remarkable creativity @JWT's Portfolio Night: Experts
The 11th edition of Portfolio Night, rolled out by JWT in Mumbai in partnership with exchange4media, saw participation from 90 young guns and 28 creative gurus
Young creatives, budding to be a part of the glitzy ad world lived their dream on the evening of May 22, 2013 in Mumbai. In the Portfolio Night, organised by JWT in their very own office, 90 young Turks participated in a race that could make their career.
The 11th edition of Portfolio Night was a star-studded event, with the who’s who of the industry on the look-out for fresh talent. Eleven advertising agencies’ 28 honchos met aspiring students who dream to make it big in the advertising world.
Commenting on the event, Colvyn Harris, CEO, JWT South Asia said, “Portfolio Night was organised completely by our in-house team, and has been organised for the first time in an ad agency. Portfolio Night is a very important initiative, especially for young students who otherwise are not able to meet the industry honchos.”
The creative gurus present at the event included Piyush Pandey, Prasoon Joshi, Bobby Pawar, Sonal Dabral and Satbir Singh.
One being asked whether the initiative is serving its purpose, Prasoon Joshi, Executive Chairman and CEO India and President South Asia, McCann Worldgroup said, “Youngsters do not get guidance and thus, this is a really important initiative. While the format of Portfolio Night is already simplified, efforts could be made to make it as simple as possible. The intent of the initiative is very clear and meaningful.”
Experts agreed unanimously that there is no lack of creativity, but there is a strong need of guidance. The youth is driven to deliver their best; however, they do not know which direction to work in. “All the students here are capable enough to be a part of any advertising agency,” said Piyush Pandey, Executive Chairman and Creative Director, South Asia, Ogilvy & Mather.
“But most of the work presented was created from an award winning perspective. I would advise the youth to create what they like and not from the view of what can win an award.”
Creative leaders expressed that they were indeed surprised to see excellent work and remarkable creativity. Satbir Singh, Managing Partner and Chief Creative Officer, Havas Worldwide India expressed that the students were digitally inclined and had a fare idea of digital and social.
“I thought the work that I saw from most of the participants was average. But having said this, each participant I've interacted with has scope to improve. There were a few who made an impression though,” said Carlton Dsouza, Chief Creative Officer, Hungama Digital Services.
Portfolio Night managed cull out some of the best talented students who could be the future of the industry.
