Omnicom mourns passing of its longtime leader Bruce Crawford

Bruce Crawford, the long-time leader of Omnicom Group, is no more. As per media reports, he died on December 28 at the age of 96. In a LinkedIn post, Omnicom mourned the passing of Bruce Crawford, a visionary leader in advertising and the arts whose influence shaped the global marketing industry for decades.

“Omnicom mourns the passing of Bruce Crawford, a visionary advertising and arts leader who leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. Appointed Chairman and CEO of Omnicom in 1989, Bruce transformed the company into a global marketing services powerhouse and remained a guiding force as Chairman until his retirement in 2018. His earlier career at BBDO Worldwide as President in 1975 and CEO in 1977 helped build one of the world’s great international creative networks, reflecting his ability to identify, inspire, and unite exceptional talent”, the LinkedIn post read.

Known for his strategic acumen and creative ambition, Crawford leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that helped define modern communications. He was celebrated not only for his professional achievements but also for his ability to inspire, empower, and unite talent across disciplines. Crawford’s lasting contributions continue to guide industry thinking and will be remembered with admiration and deep respect.

Opera was Bruce’s greatest passion outside of business. In 1985, Bruce brought the same vision to The Metropolitan Opera, strengthening its artistic programming before returning to lead Omnicom. From 1990 to 1991 and again from 2005 to 2008, he was Chairman of the Executive Committee at The Metropolitan Opera. He also served as Chairman, and led the revitalization, of Lincoln Center from 2002 to 2005.
