McDonald’s: Gol
Creative Agency: DDB Chicago

McDonald’s wouldn’t seem to be the best fit for a game that stands for fitness and it would probably have been strange if the fast food giant had taken the traditional approach of integrating its brand messaging with the sport. However, the folks at DDB eschewed the traditional approach and instead focused on the fans. From women to old men and children, the ad is a tribute to the diverseness of the game’s fan base and the concept of “joga bonita” or ‘The Beautiful Game.’

Nike: The Last Game & Winner Stays

YouTube Views: 48,880,134 (The Last Game), 79,851,650 (Winner Stays)

Both the commercials play on Nike’s World Cup tagline of ‘Risk Everything’. ‘The Last Game’ is an animated feature that pits football stars Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo, Franck Ribery, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, etc. against their ‘perfect’ clone counterparts. They are an example of good storytelling and brand message integration.

The “Winner Stays” commercial plays on every fan’s dream; to play as their football idol. Featuring the trademark humour of the ‘Risk Everything’ series, it also has appearances from many of the current international football stars.
