The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released the highlights for telecom subscription data for the month of May. It has been noted that the total number of telephone subscribers has now reached 1204.98 million out of which 1180.82 million are wireless subscriptions and 24.16 million are wireline, indicating the ever increasing demand for wireless telephone connections. The number of active wireline subscriptions stood at 1019.55 million.
The wireless broadband service also holds a major share with 273.38 million subscribers as compared to 18.23 million wireline subscribers of the total 291.61 million broadband subscribers.
The total number of telephone subscribers in India has seen a growth from 1198.89 million in April’17 to 1204.98 million in May’17 showing a monthly growth rate of 0.51 per cent. Rural subscription is growing at a steady rate rising from 502.90 million to 507.92 million during the same period growing at 1 per cent.
The telephone density in India is recorded at 93.61 per cent with Delhi holding the highest share among all the states in the country.
The wireless subscription in urban areas increased from 675.48 million at the end of Apr’17 to 676.65 million at the end of May’17; wireless subscription in rural areas also increased from 499.12 million to 504.18 million during the same period. The monthly growth rates of urban and rural wireless subscription were 0.17 per cent and 1.01 per cent, respectively.
As of May 31, 2017, the private access service providers held 90.96 per cent market share of the wireless subscribers whereas BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, had a market share of only 9.04 per cent. Here’s a look at the graph of service providers and their share in the market.
Out of the total wireless subscribers (1180.82 million), 1019.55 million were active on the date of peak VLR in the month of May’17. The proportion of active wireless subscribers was approximately 86.34 per cent of the total wireless subscriber base.
Reliance Jio is the fastest growing service provider monthly and shows a growth rate of 4.25 per cent followed by BSNL at 1.34 per cent and Bharti at 0.76 per cent.
As per the reports received from the service providers, the number of broadband subscribers increased from 284.23 million at the end of Apr’17 to 291.61 million at the end of May’17 with a monthly growth rate of 2.60 per cent.
Top five service providers constituted 88.23 per cent market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of May’17. These service providers were Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd (117.34 million), Bharti Airtel (53.30 million), Vodafone (40.43 million), Idea Cellular (24.63 million) and BSNL (21.59 million).
As of May 31, 2017, the top five Wired Broadband Service providers were BSNL (9.80 million), Bharti Airtel (2.09 million), Atria Convergence Technologies (1.20 million), MTNL (0.99 million) and YOU Broadband (0.64 million).
The top five Wireless Broadband Service providers were Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (117.34 million), Bharti Airtel (51.21 million), Vodafone (40.42 million), Idea Cellular (24.63 million) and Reliance Communications (14.46 million).
