Her career took shape through formative experiences at some of the industry’s most respected organizations. “It was a fortunate turn of events that allowed me to transform this passion into a full-time career,” she shares, highlighting her early days at UTV, a leading media and entertainment brand, and Perfect Relations, a respected PR agency. She describes these roles as more than just jobs; each role sharpened her understanding of the industry and built the foundation for her eventual rise to leadership.
Her Inspiring Rise to Becoming the Youngest CEO of Weber Shandwick India
Valerie's path to becoming one of the youngest CEOs in India’s PR industry was shaped by deliberate and thoughtful decisions. Becoming the CEO of Weber Shandwick India wasn’t easy. "It took perseverance, hard work, and a willingness to challenge the norm," she says. "Continuous learning has been key to shaping how I lead today." She now guides the company with the same passion for storytelling that first drew her to public relations.
“One of the first things I did was dive into different experiences, working with clients across various industries and taking on multiple roles,” Pinto shares. This approach helped her develop a solid understanding of communication and problem-solving.
But it wasn’t just about gaining experience. Valerie also highlights the value of building a strong professional network and learning from mentors. “I sought advice from seasoned professionals who offered guidance during crucial moments, helping me navigate the complexities of the PR world,” she adds.
Valerie’s commitment to continuous learning and adaptability played a significant role in her success. “Whether it was attending workshops, reading industry materials, or trying new approaches, I was always focused on staying ahead. This dedication to evolving with the industry has been a driving force in my career,” she notes, emphasizing how this mindset has been key to her achievements.
Her Efforts to Empower Women and Promote Gender Equality
At Weber Shandwick, Valerie Pinto has been a key advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
She believes that a team reflecting the diversity of society not only enriches workplace culture but also boosts creativity. “Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion starts with how we hire. We aim to build a team that truly reflects the variety in our society. This diversity not only makes our workplace better but also strengthens the quality of our creative work,” she explains, emphasizing the core values at Weber Shandwick (Courage, Inclusion, Curiosity, Impact).
Valerie recognizes the unique challenges women face in the industry and has introduced mentorship programs to help them step into leadership roles. Drawing from her own experiences, she highlights the importance of resilience, hard work, and self-confidence, urging future leaders to tackle challenges directly and advocate for themselves.
She also incorporates gender equality into client campaigns, addressing critical issues like pay equity and fair representation. A notable example is her work with Abbott, which focuses on raising awareness about menopause and bringing women’s health issues to the forefront. “With these initiatives, we aim to create a more equitable and inclusive environment, not just at Weber Shandwick, but throughout the communications industry,” Valerie affirms, highlighting her broader vision for change.
Her Visionary Social and Health Initiatives
“Advocating for gender equality and professional growth is at the forefront of my efforts, ensuring that women have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive,” Valerie proudly states. She leverages her communications expertise to drive positive change, raise awareness, and mobilize resources to improve health outcomes and advocate for women’s rights.
As a founding member of the Global Network for Women in PR and a signatory of the United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles Secretariat (UNWEPS), she plays a pivotal role in building a supportive community for women in public relations and related fields. “I focus on fostering connections, facilitating mentorship programs, and organizing opportunities that empower women to excel in their careers,” Pinto explains.
She also leads the board of Path in India, where she is deeply involved in strategic planning and program development to support health and social initiatives. “Collaborating with fellow board members, we design and implement strategies that address critical health challenges and promote social well-being. I aim to create a significant impact by advocating for women’s rights and improving health outcomes through effective communication strategies,” she describes.
How Her Diverse Interests Have Shaped Her Leadership and Success Approach
Sharing her learnings as a national-level athlete, she illustrates, “My background as a national-level athlete has instilled in me a strong sense of discipline, resilience, and a competitive spirit—qualities that have been essential in my professional life. Competing at such a high level taught me how to handle pressure and push through challenges while maintaining focus on my goals.” Additionally, she also emphasizes how sports taught her the importance of teamwork and that success is rarely a solo endeavor.
Pinto's passion for baking further complements her professional journey and nurtures her creativity and meticulous nature. “The culinary arts require patience, precision, and an eye for detail—traits that translate well into crafting meticulous communication strategies and executing flawless campaigns," she adds.
Her Bold Vision for the Future
Talking about her vision for the future, Valerie expresses, “Looking ahead, I aim to set new benchmarks for the industry, continue to do work out of the box, explore new ground, and go where no one has gone before,” she confidently reflects.
