Notification for streamlining ops helping DPOs to revamp businesses
The impact of TRAI's consultation paper on distribution of TV channels is helping Distribution Platform Operators (DPOs) to grow & expand their business besides bringing clarity
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had notified amendments in February this year to the existing regulatory framework with regard to distribution of TV channels from broadcasters to Distribution Platform Operators (DPOs), viz. cable, DTH, HITS and IPTV operators.
The objective behind issuing notification for distributions channels has been done to address the market, distortions caused because of the present role assumed by the authorised agents (aggregators) of the broadcasters.
Implementing the consultation within the due date, DPOs such as The One Alliance and India Cast Media Distribution ended their joint venture with respective broadcasters.
India Cast ended their joint venture with Disney UTV and decided to sell out their channels as agent. While The One Alliance also ended the venture with Times Television Network this week.
The split of The One Alliance and Times Television Network and India Cast is not the first one. A couple of months ago, STAR India and Zee TV dissolved their distribution body, MediaPro.
DPOs are happy with the latest recommendations of TRAI for content aggregators as it is helping them to expand.
The head of a leading DPO, on condition of anonymity said, “The impact of this consultation paper has been very good and we are following the law and restructuring our business.”
This initiative gives more clarity over different issues such as generating RIO, servicing agent and providing channels. For more updates, be socially connected with us on
