Cannes Lions Special: Being in the moments that matter: Ravpreet Ganesh
At Cannes, my belief that I am in this amazing business of telling brand stories that people want to hear, engage with and share is strengthened, says Ravpreet Ganesh, EVP, Leo Burnett India
The quote that greeted me as I took my first hesitant step into the Palais Des Festivals at Cannes was “Be in the moments that matter.” I stood rooted as I read this beautiful line steeped in simplicity.
Sounds simple, but what do you do when every moment matters and the entire day is filled with inspiration! When you rub shoulders with people you have admired and watched and read and heard about.
For the last five days, I have been like a child let loose in a bright, cheerful exotic candy shop. I am literally running around with curiosity, greed and lots of hunger to be able to bite into everything.
I have been fighting a battle of sorts every day. The toughest decisions being made as if my life depended on it. Which session or which workshop to attend? Or should the day just be spent exploring the phenomenal work on display as it gets judged? Or then maybe it's better to just be out there breathing the same air as the great creative people? Or then better still, just meet, talk, converse, learn and share at the at Gutter bar - all to end peacefully while absorbing midnight air at this stunning gorgeous Riviera called Cannes as it sets on fire night after night.
While sitting in the Grand Audi or watching screenings or seeing the displays, I have experienced myriad excitement, major envy as well as have felt challenged, inspired, surprised, humbled and nourished at the same time.
I am soaking every moment of this as each moment matters and I want it all. I am a Cannes virgin as they say so each breath I take is really inspiring me and fuelling my imagination and recharging me as I will take the return flight, in a few days.
It’s hard for me to choose a single highlight from Cannes this year. But being in a moment in time where I am surrounded by people who believe that creativity moves and changes people is definitely the icing on the cake.
I have woken up every morning not knowing what to expect from the day and have consistently, without fail, been blown away by the sheer power of imagination and creativity.
The simplicity of the ideas and their powerful executions have made an impact on my mind about the core of storytelling. For me, the belief that I am in this amazing business of telling brand stories that people want to hear, engage with and share is strengthened. And the major paradigm shift has been that simplicity holds the power of the idea while the core of the intrinsic craft lies in execution. And for that to take shape, as creative communicators, we need to think deeply like marketers, behave like entertainers and move like tech start-ups.
As leaders, to foster this, we need to bring in diversity, nourish culture of constant curiosity and throw challenges that get people to huddle together and engage with those who share the passion.
