ZEEL’s Tamil GEC Zee Tamizh goes on air from October 12

Zee Tamizh, a 24-hour Tamil general entertainment channel from Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL), part of the Essel Group, went on air on October 12. This is Zee Network’s 33rd channel and third in the South after the Group’s Telugu and Kannada channels.

Zee Tamizh will have a mix of mega serials, game and reality shows, music programmes and cultural shows. With three news bulletins a day, it would be a complete entertainment channel, asserted V Chandrasekaar, Senior Vice-President and Business Head, Zee Tamizh.

A pay channel, Zee Tamizh was currently available on DishTV and talks were on to make the channel available on other DTH platforms and MSOs, Chandrasekaar further said.

ZEEL had invested around Rs 100 crore in this venture, most of which had gone into content procurement, informed Punit Goenka, CEO, Zee Entertainment. He added, “The content of Zee Tamizh is on par with our other regional channels of the Group, if not better.”

This is a second coming for the Zee Group in the Tamil Nadu market. Five years ago, the Group had launched Bharathi TV, a Tamil GEC, which was later withdrawn due to various reasons. “As we see a better level-playing field, this time we are here to stay and stay for long time,” Chandrasekaar said.

On whether the company would launch a separate news channel in Tamil, he said, “As we go forward, we will keep adding to our bouquet of offerings. ZEEL’s next stop is expected to be Kerala.”
