TV channels line up special content for Diwali

Broadcasters know that Diwali is the perfect time to get in more viewers, which is why their special programming is at a peak in this period. This is also the time when the entire family is under one roof celebrating this occasion and TV viewing is naturally expected to be higher at this time, all the more reason for channels to work on their programming strategy and create special shows. With Diwali being celebrated this weekend, we take a look at what channels have planned around this time during this year.

Celebrations across all Hindi GECs properties

Viacom18’s Hindi GEC Colors doesn’t have any special Diwali show but it has planned highpoints across its popular properties like ‘Thapki…Pyaar Ki,’ ‘Sasural Simar Ka,’ ‘Shakti…Astitva Ke Eshaas Kii,’ ‘Bigg Boss 10’ and ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.’ SAB Ki Diwali is their annual Diwali event. Additionally, across all shows there will be Diwali celebrations.

Sony SAB celebrated Diwali with their annual property called SAB Ki Diwali on October 27 which was filled with colourful performances by cast of ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ and its other shows. Additionally, across all their shows there will be Diwali celebrations as part of programming. 

&TV will presents ‘& It’s Diwali,’ a special two-and-a-half-hour programme with performances by leading artists from the television industry on October 29 at 8pm. Presented by FMCG Brand Tide and Powered by confectionary major Cadbury Celebrations are the sponsors on board for this show.

Marathon on English GEC

AXN plans to celebrate the festive occasion with American sci-fi show called ‘Under the Dome’ on October 31 at 10pm.

Comedy Central will run American sitcom ‘The Carmichael Show’ for their Diwali special programming on October 29 and 30, 4pm onwards.

English GEC Colors Infinity will run marathon of American television drama ‘The Royals’ on October 29 and 30 at 10.30 am.  

 Movie carnival on Hindi and English GECs

Zee Network’s Hindi movie channel &Pictures is presenting ‘Diwali Picture Carnival’ from October 23 to November 2 comprising family movies across different genres like action, comedy, romance and horror like ‘Ramaiya Vastavaiya’ and ‘1920 London’ amongst others.

 SPN’s Hindi movies Sony MAX and MAX2 are commencing Diwali with three-day long film festival from October 29 to 31 where they will be showcasing Bollywood hits like ‘Chandni,’ Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,’ ‘Guru,’ ‘Bahubali,’ ‘PK’ and ‘Dilwale.’ October 31 will see Sony MAX showcasing latest hits like ‘Dhoom 3,’ ‘ABCD2’ and ‘Return of Rebel’ while Sony MAX2 will air ‘Don’ and ‘Swarag Se Sunder’ amongst others. 

English movie channel Sony Pix will air musical comedy ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ under the property Super Pix at 10pm while the other English movie channel under SPN is bringing in Diwali with an American French drama ‘Serena,’ scheduled at 1pm and 9pm.  

Romedy Now is broadcasting a special property called ‘Diwali Delights’ with an interesting line-up of movies including ‘The Duff’, ‘What if’, ‘We're the Millers,’ ‘About Time,’ ‘A Little Bit of Heaven,’ ‘Endless Love,’ ‘Begin Again,’ and ‘Cuban Fury’ amongst others from October 24 to November 4 on weekdays. 

Times Network’s other English movie channel is showcasing special property around Diwali called ‘Fireworks’ from October 24 to 29 at 9 pm. The line-up includes ‘Dracula Untold,’ ‘Fast Five,’ ‘2012,’ ‘Godzilla,’ ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ and ‘Furious 6’.

 Star Movies is showcasing Hollywood blockbusters from today till October 30 including ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ ‘The Martian,’ ‘Ant Man’ and ‘Cindrella.’

Musical bonanza

Music channel 9X Jalwa plans to air a special show called ‘Double Shots’ where two songs are packaged together depending on a mood/theme/artist. It will be aired from October 28 to November 1. They are also launching a show today titled ‘Ek Gaana, Ek Kahani’ which offers trivia on popular song from 90s by musicians and composers.

Its English counterpart 9XO has launched a special show from today till October 31 called 9XO Sparklist which will play popular English numbers. The show will be linked to their 9XO Hook App. 

Vh1’s Diwali special show, ‘Vh1 One in a Billion’ will premiere few of the best music videos that have achieved the milestone of having over a billion views in the digital world on October 31 at 12 pm and 8 pm.
