Passing with flying 'Colors', the channel cements its No. 1 position

Colors has emerged as clear leader in the Hindi GEC space after taking the No.1 spot for three out of the last four weeks. Star Plus on the other hand has seen its ratings on the decline despite few signs of resurgence.

According to BARC data HSM markets Individuals C&S 1lakh+, the channel rose to No.1 spot first in week 34 when its ratings decrease marginally to 360 million from 364 million in week 33. However, during the same week Star Plus saw an even larger drop in its ratings to 359 million in week 34 from 387 million in week 33. This drop in ratings of Star Plus came on an even larger decline in ratings the previous week where the ratings fell to 387 million in week 33 from 409 million in week 32. Colors’ ratings had however managed to remain stable.

Though in week 35 Star Plus regained No.1 spot. The decline in its ratings was a little lesser in comparison to Colors which too had declined. Star Plus’ ratings declined to 355 million in week 35 from 359 million in week 34, while Colors’ ratings had declined to 354 million in week 35 from 369 million in week 34.

In week 36 however Colors regained No.1 spot on the back of a large rise in its ratings. The channel’s ratings rose to 386 million in week 36 from 354 million in week 35. Despite a rise in the ratings of Star Plus it just wasn’t enough for it to get an edge over Colors. Its ratings rose to 370 million in week 36 from 355 million in week 35.

The gap further widened between No.1 and No.2 spot in the current week 37 as Colors saw a much bigger rise in its ratings than Star Plus. Colors ratings rose to 414 million in week 37 from 386 million in week 36. Star Plus’ ratings on the other hand increased to only 381 million in week 37 from 370 million in week 36.

Shows on Colors gain momentum

For the past four weeks three shows of Colors have been in the top five shows, according to BARC ratings (ratings in ‘000’s). In week 34 apart from No.1 spot which was occupied by Kumkum Bhagya on Zee TV, the other four shows were all on Colors. This included Sasural Simar Ka at No.2 with ratings of 5438, Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi at No.3 with ratings of 5365, Swaragini at No.4 with ratings of 5300 and Udaan at No.5 with ratings of 5243. None of the shows of Star Plus were among the top five shows.

In week 35 three of Colors’ shows were in the top five shows. This included Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi at No.2 with ratings increased to 5742, Sasural Simar Ka at No.3 with ratings increasing to 5557 and Swaragini at No.5 spot with ratings increasing to 5513. Star Plus had one show Saath Nibhana Saathiya at No.4 with ratings of 5552.

In week 36 too, three of Colors’ shows were in the top five shows list. This included Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi at No.2 with ratings rising to 6184, Swaragini at No.4 spot with ratings rising to 5739 and Udaan at No.5 with ratings at 5643. Star Plus’ show Saath Nibhana Saathiya was at No.3 with ratings of 5782.

In week 37 the show Sasural Simar Ka rose to take No.1 spot with ratings of 6819. The other Colors show in the top five shows was Udaan at No.4 spot and ratings at 5680. Star Plus too had two shows Saath Nibhana Saathiya at No.2 with ratings of 6644 and Yeh Hai Mohabbatein at No.5 with ratings of 5602.

According to the TAM ratings this week six shows of Colors are in the top 10 list of shows in the Hindi GEC. This includes Swaragini, Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi, Sasural Simar Ka, Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat, Udaan and Comedy Nights Bachao. Star Plus on the other hand had three shows in the top 10 which included Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Saath Nibhana Saathiya and Diya Aur Baati Hum.

This shows the difference in the ratings growth of Colors. While Star Plus last year had a majority of its shows in the top 10 list, the viewership scales are now in favour of Colors’ shows. With the launch of popular reality show Bigg Boss season 9 on October 11 the ratings of Colors is expected to rise even further. It could even cement Colors at the No.1 spot among the Hindi GECs.
