MCCS slated to wind up their regional news channel ABP Sanjha

It has been a long and winding journey for MCCS to launch their Punjabi news channel ABP Sanjha. The channel applied for a license in early 2013 but the clearance took more than 18 months from the government.

In a surprising turn of events, ABP News plans to terminate the broadcast of their Punjabi news channel. The reason is unknown as of now but according to the sources, the management informed its 170 + employees to resign and offered them a severance of three months.

It can be highlighted that on July 31st this year the Modi Government had cleared the licences for MCCS from the MIB for its Punjabi news channel ABP Sanjha.

No comments were received from ABP at the time of filing the report.

In an earlier interview with exchange4media, Ashok Venkatramani, CEO, ABP Sanjha said, “We have just got the license and we are in the process of getting the team together and resolving last minute issues. Hopefully, the channel should be up and running soon. The focus is obviously Punjab. It is a great market and a robust economy. Many SMEs have established strong and solid businesses. It is also a very brand conscious market. Overall, our assessment is that the potential is quite good. Historically, we’ve seen that for advertisers, Punjab has been a difficult market to crack in terms of reach and there is a vacuum there, specifically in news.”
