Jaya TV to start second 24-hour channel shortly

Tamil entertainment channel Jaya TV, will soon have a sibling. The channel would be news-based, offering infotainment content and news bulletins round the clock, according to Murali Raaman, Vice-President, Programmes & Operations, Jaya TV. The programming content will include district round-ups, weekly national and international news shows.

K P Sunil, who currently heads Jaya TV's news division, will be the in-charge of the new channel. He said, "It will be a news channel, having infotainment, talk shows, chat shows, panels and more."

The channel is currently engaged in finalising the content format for the new channel and would reduce the number of news bulletins on Jaya TV from seven to three. While the channel planned to have eight hours of news and 16 hours of other programming everyday, Sunil added that there would be flexibility on the hours of news programming and that in case of special occasions like elections and emergencies, they would shift to a 24-hour news format with continuous updates.

Jaya TV will set up bureaus for the new channel in the four metros, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. "We will be hiring people across the country. We are also taking people on stringership even in some cases to be present in every state capital," said Sunil.

Asked whether the channel would be launched before the next assembly elections, Murali Raaman said, "We will be announcing the launch dates shortly. It should be very soon." He added that the new channel would attempt to cater to all age groups, breaking away from the current trend of only a certain segment watching news channels. The only other Tamil channel offering news is Sun News from the Sun stable.
