To leverage its global portfolio of channels in India, Discovery Networks India has unveiled an expansion strategy. The company has applied to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to launch three new and diverse 24-hour channels – Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo and Discovery HD. The three new channels are expected to go live in the first quarter of 2009 and are awaiting Ministry approval.

Discovery Networks currently broadcasts three channels in India – Discovery Channel, Discovery Travel & Living and Animal Planet.

Each of the proposed channels reiterates the company’s strength and commitment to offer clients an effective and efficient advertising platform and a nationwide access to discerning, well-informed and globally-mindful Indian viewers.

Rahul Johri, SVP & General Manager, Discovery Networks India, said, “We are witnessing television consumption in India shifting towards high-quality, credible and entertaining programmes and an increase in demand for an alternative to soaps, movies and sitcoms. Channels that have a distinct brand proposition would emerge as most-preferred destinations for viewers, advertisers and affiliates alike. Our existing channels are beneficiaries of this growing trend. This changing market dynamics, research and viewer feedback suggests that Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo and Discovery HD will satisfy the demands and desires of the aspirational India and will further strengthen our portfolio.”

Discovery Networks International had recently announced the integration of its India and Asia businesses to position Discovery more competitively in the region by allowing more collaboration across both businesses and more effectively share content and resources in order to drive continued growth.

Discovery Science is dedicated to making science programming accessible, relevant and entertaining. By examining the impact of science and technology on our everyday lives, Discovery Science searches for the answers to the questions that have eluded us for centuries and reveals life’s greatest mysteries and smallest wonders, from uncovering lost worlds to exploring the latest in scientific discoveries from today’s headlines.

Discovery Turbo is a new network offering entertaining and inspiring programming for people who love the adrenaline rush of all things motored – be it cars, trucks, motorcycles and mopeds to planes and trains and everything in between. From Formula One to motocross and aircraft shows to car clubs, Discovery Turbo satisfies the passions of weekend warriors and fervent fans alike by showing all aspects of motoring life.

Discovery HD is the only global high-definition television network offering factual and lifestyle entertainment that fulfils the promise of high-definition technology. The network, launched in 2005, is available in 17 markets worldwide, making Discovery the leading provider of international HD services. Discovery HD offers exclusive content from Discovery’s extensive worldwide library of thousands of hours of high-definition programming. Discovery’s HD programming is offered in 1080i, along with 5.1 surround sound, which offers definition far superior to both NTSC and PAL and lends itself perfectly to the type of rich, spectacular images Discovery brand is renowned for.
