IBF elects new office bearers; MSM’s Man Jit Singh is President

In its annual general meeting, held on September 29, 2012, the IBF (Indian Broadcasting Foundation) Board elected Man Jit Singh of Multi Screen Media as President. Moving from its traditional single Vice President system, this year, the IBF has three Vice Presidents -- Sunil Lulla of Times TV Network, Rajat Sharma of India TV and Punit Goenka of Zee. Discovery’s Rahul Johri is the Treasurer of the Foundation.

Apart from the office bearers, the IBF Board comprises Past President STAR India’s Uday Shankar, Sudhanshu Vats of Viacom18, NP Singh of Multi Screen Media and K Madhavan of Asianet Communications. Besides the above, the 12-member board also comprises I Venkat of ETV, Zee Network’s Jawahar Goel, K V L Narayan Rao of NDTV and Siddharth Jain from Turner India International.

The Board co-opted Tripurari Sharan of Doordarshan, UTV’s Ronnie Screwvala and Markand Adhikari of Sri Adhikari Bros as Directors.

Shankar thanked all Members for their support during his two-year term. “Last two years have been very important for the Broadcasting Industry with new changes and technology being ushered in. I have had the most eventful tenure as President as I witnessed all these changes happening right in front of me. Be it DAS or institutionalizing the self-regulating mechanism in the form of Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC),” he said.

“It is a moment of change and I would expect that the momentum that we have generated finds a new impetus after my presidency,” Shankar said while pledging support to his successor, Man Jit Singh. Shankar advised the IBF members to be “well prepared for the implementation of digitisation and plugging the loopholes, if any, before the deadline”.

The sentiment found echo with the new President, who said, “Digitisation is the biggest challenge that stares at us currently and its timely and phased implementation is of prime concern. With very little time left for implementation, the IBF must take the lead on the issue.”

Chalking a new road map for IBF, Singh added, “As an industry body, the IBF must become a more robust and representative forum where every Broadcaster is encouraged to come up with innovative ideas to drive the industry forward.” He thanked the outgoing President for his relentless efforts in securing a larger role for the Broadcasting Industry during his tenure.

The reason to appoint three Vice Presidents was for dealing with the growing challenges confronting the industry and for better coordination across different industry initiatives such as digitisation, regulatory, fiscal and content-related issues or matters pertaining to the industry as a whole.
