DD to have VSAT network across country

Doordarshan has approved a scheme for the establishment of a network of very small aperture terminals (VSAT) at 70 locations across the country with the central hub in Delhi. This is in view to strengthen newsgathering facilities. Action for procurement of VSAT has already been initiated, confirmed an official from Doordarshan.

Establishment of the VSAT network would enable feeding of news from the 70 locations to regional news units through satellite, the official said. This network would also enable voice/data communication among the locations, where the VSATs are being set up.

Recently, Doordarshan was in the news since its proposal for a pilot project in High Definition TV was approved. As part of the project, the facility for field production in HDTV is envisaged to be set up in Delhi in 2007-08.
