Broadcasters offer movie marathons, documentaries and musical tributes to mark Republic Day

Watching the live telecast of our soldiers march in full swing during the Republic Day on Doordarshan has been a staple for generations, and still remains so for many. As the country celebrated its 67th Republic Day, the broadcasters had varied offerings lined up for the viewers, from movie marathons to special shows revolving around eminent historical figures and documentary films.

India’s past glories on infotainment channel

Living up to its name and content, History TV18 telecast shows revolving around Mahatma Gandhi and the establishment of East India Company, named ‘Gandhi and The Birth of Empire: East India Company’. 

Travel shows like ‘Dynamo Magician Impossible’ and ‘India on 4 Wheels’ were also featured on the channel. The other highlight was Vice’s (news magazine series) report on UP-based Pink Gang, a gang led by Sampat Pal Devi to combat the injustice of sexual assault on women.

 Discovery Channel presented the chronicles of Indian soldiers at the Siachen glacier in the Himalayan Mountains, honouring their heroism and sacrifice in a special show ---‘Revealed: Siachen’.

News channels salute Pathankot martyrs

CNN-IBN and IBN7 telecasted a range of special programming to mark the occasion. IBN7 featured the winners of this year’s National Bravery Awards and India’s Defence Contingent and its capabilities. While CNN-IBN paid tribute to the martyrs of Pathankot terror attack through its documentary ‘Saluting Bravehearts’, which showcases the stories of the martyrs with candid interviews of their family members.

What GECs offered

Colors and DD National showcased the 67th Republic Day celebrations live. This was the second year Colors telecasted the national proceedings. SAB TV integrated two of its popular shows ‘Baalveer’ and ‘Police Factory’, while Sony Entertainment Television’s CID team was seen solving a murder case revolving around Republic Day event in the UK.

Bollywood music channel 9XM celebrated Republic Day by airing a special video titled #OneDreamOneIndia. This video emphasizes that political leaders stand united despite their different political ideologies during any kind of adversity that besets the country.

Star Gold premiered the much acclaimed Meghna Gulzar's film ‘Talvar’, which is based on the Arushi Talwar murder case.

Marathons at English Entertainment channels

Movie channel Sony PIX aired all the Spiderman movies like ‘Spider-Man’, ‘Spider-Man 2’, ‘Spider-Man 3’, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ in a movie marathon format. Zee Studio lined-up popular blockbusters like ‘Iron Man 3’, ‘Thor 2’, ‘Transformers 3’, ‘Gi: Joe 2’, ‘Shooter’, ‘Minority Report’ and ‘The Peace Maker’, while English entertainment channel Zee Café showcased the final season of ‘Cougar Town’.

FX aired back to back episodes of popular show ‘House M.D’. The channel also initiated an interaction with their viewers through their Twitter contest #HouseOfSarcasm, which ran parallel with the telecast marathon. On the other hand, Colors Infinity featured post apocalyptic drama series, ‘The Last Ship’.
