Airtel INB Awards 2009: The winners speak...

The news broadcasting industry got together to felicitate its achievers in the second edition of the Airtel Indian News Broadcasting Awards (INBA), held in the Capital on August 26, 2009. exchange4media caught up with the winners to know what was going on in their minds as they received industry recognition. Airtel was the main sponsor for INBA.

Here’s what the winners had to say…

Shivi Sudarshan, Shailesh Kumar, Devender Singh Bisht - Doobi Duniya ka Dard, Rishi Nath, Doobi Duniya ka Dard- BAG Films – News Videographer of the Year 2009 – Hindi

“We feel very good about winning the award tonight, it is very special to us. Being there in the flood was a very different experience altogether. We thank everyone for this Award.”

Sandeep Das, Kosi - The River Untamed, NewsX – News Videographer of the Year 2009 – English

“Thank you all for this Award. It means a lot to me. Filming this was a real experience and a difficult task to handle.”

Mini Menon, Mini's Showreel, UTVi – News Videographer of the Year 2009 – English

“This Award goes to the entire UTVi team. It is great that we are being recognised for the efforts that we have put in to set up this channel. This is the celebration of the team’s work. It is a great honour, especially for a business news channel. With all the ups and downs that we have gone through this is a great encouragement. It is an absolutely amazing feeling.”

Chetan Sharma, An Appointment with Modi, Zee Business – Business News Anchor of the Year 2009 – Hindi

“After 10 years of English journalism, I get the Award for Hindi journalism. This means that all we say about being in language journalism is not so true after all. I must say that commoditisation of anchors is not the best way forward. We are journalists and it is our duty to unearth the false news and rumours and bring out the truth. Movie stars live in a false world, but we cannot do that because we bring out the best we can. Watching a business channel is not everyone’s cup of tea, and when it comes to a Hindi business channel, the chances get even slimmer. The biggest challenge for me was to make my family watch a Hindi business news channel and I am glad now that they are.”

Uma Shankar, Mandir In Pakistan - NDTV India – News Reporter of the Year 2009 – Hindi

“This Award really means a lot to me. It shows the worth of the hard work we have done. In Pakistan, there was no one with me and that’s when I had to take things in my own hands, be it the camera or talking to people, and it showed me so much more. It is a great honour to receive this and I thank each one of you for recognising this.”

Shiv Pujan Jha, Kosi - The River Untamed, NewsX – News Reporter of the Year 2009 – English

“This goes to the entire NewsX team. This also goes out to all those who helped out in the floods and to all those who were effected in the floods and survived without food and water. They are the true spirit. It is only when you experience something like this that you know the true meaning of life and how difficult it gets to survive.”

Pankaj Pachauri, Humlog - NDTV India – News Show Host of the Year 2009 – Hindi

“Considering the lot of complaints that go against the Hindi News channels, it is a pleasure to get an Award like this. I thank you for acknowledging the work done. Broadcast is a difficult field and we need encouragement like this.”

Khushdeep Sehgal, Vote ka Agnipath, Zee News – News Producer of the Year 2009 – Hindi

“This would definitely not be possible without the support of all my teammates. I thank you all on this wonderful event for this Award. There is one more thing that I would like to say, if you say something from the heart it never goes unnoticed, and this is what we have been delivering to our audiences.”

Sujay Bhattacharya, Great Speeches & Truth about Simi, Headlines Today – News Producer of the Year 2009 – English

“Before coming here tonight, I had this great speech ready, thinking that I would say it aloud to all of you, but now up here, after winning the Award, I just have one thing to say, and that is a big ‘thank you’. This really feels great and it was so unexpected. It feels even better because producers are usually not recognised or rather not really awarded that much.”

Deepti Sachdeva, NDTV Expose - Babies at Risk, NDTV India – Young Professional of the Year 2009 (under-30)

“Thank you all for this Award. I would really like to take this opportunity and thank my entire team who worked with me on this story. This is one story that I will never be able to forget. It took me about three months to get this story done because we had to figure out a way to find out the hospitals that do this and then get comments and find the real truth in the story. I am happy to do the little bit that I could do for these children and I thank you all for acknowledging this effort.”

Barkha Dutt, NDTV 24x7 – News Television Editor-in-Chief of the Year 2009 – English

“I have been in journalism for 16 years, and during this time, I have been through many different avatars – from being a reporter to a news reader, but the toughest has been that of an editor. I take this opportunity to thank everyone at NDTV right from the cameramen to the reporters to the young employees, who spend hours getting the ticker that you see on the television and getting it right. It is really incredible the work that they do and the support that they have given us in making the channel what it is today. And before I leave this platform I must say that good journalism is not just acknowledged through awards, but it also sells.”

Rajat Sharma, India TV – News Television Entrepreneur of the Year 2009

“I have received a lot of awards, but this is truly exceptional because this is an entrepreneur award and all other awards have been for journalism. I would like to thank everyone who believed in me to build up this channel. I spent many years right from the start and I have come up till here with the help of these people to make my channel what it is today. India TV has come up with a lot of difficulty and even though the road ahead will be difficult, we will stand where we are.”

Ravi Prakash, TV 9 – Regional Language News Broadcaster of the Year 2009

“TV 9 today is the No. 1 news network in India and this has all become possible only because of my team. Today, I can proudly say that regional strength is regaining and this is a very good thing. We have news in seven languages already and we are going to come up with three more. This recognition and Award will really help us in the future.”

Other prominent winners were:

QW Naqvi, Aaj Tak – News Television Editor-in-Chief of the Year 2009 – Hindi

G Krishnan, Aaj Tak – News Television CEO of the Year 2009 Karan Thapar (i) India Tonight, (ii) War of Words - CNBC TV18 – News Show Host of the Year 2009 – English
