Spikes Asia 2009: India there, but Indians missing...

Day one of Spikes Asia saw delegates in decent numbers make it to the seminar rooms. However, the absence of Indian delegates was obvious. For starters, of the 830-plus registered delegates, there were only 19 from India.

Some of the delegates seen at the event on the first day included Colvyn Harris from JWT India, Jonoo Simon from Mudra, Sandip Bansal from Starcom Mediavest Group, Rajesh Jiandani of Kodak India and a strong delegation of seven members from The Times of India, including Dr Bhaskar Das, Rahul Kansal and Sujoy Ghosh.

Bates 141’s Sonal Dabral was also seen at the event. In a conversation with exchange4media on the low participation from India, Dabral said, “It has only to do with the recessionary times around us than anything else. Spikes Asia has been an important event and now, it is stronger than ever. I am glad that there are regional events like these, which serve as a platform to recognise the work done in the region and the talent in these markets as well.”

Spikes Academy has one Indian student from NMIMS, too, and another Indian at the event was Vandana Rajpaul from Sports Syndicator. Some of the other reasons for the low participation were also the fact that this was Spikes Asia’s first year in its current avatar and that there still was a bit of wait and watch before creative professionals started planning for Spikes Asia.

For countries like China and Japan, the number of entries increased from last year. However, for India, the number of entries was down from 438 last year to 321. India was the second highest participant in 2008, and is the fourth highest this year.

However, with 37 shortlists, India made its presence felt at the awards on the first day. India’s importance in the global scheme of affairs was discussed in the various seminars too. But there is still another day to go before we know whether India betters or improves its awards score as compared to last year.
